The information included below is your guide to ensuring you have wrapped up 2023 adequately.

Closing Your 2023 Books

Just because the calendar has rolled to a new year, does not mean your business is in 2024 yet. You have a few steps to take before this can happen and please don't wait any longer to complete this list. Each day that passes sets you up to get "too busy" to do it "today" and then before you know it, it's April 1st and you have only 14 days left to prepare for the tax filing deadline of Monday, April 15, 2024 - YES, you read that right... This year the 2024 tax filing date is the 15th NOT the 18th as you may be accustomed to.

1. Verify that all payments received have been recorded.
2. If any invoices are still open, confirm if they will be paid at this time or if you will write them off as a loss.
3. Ensure you've paid all your bills for 2023.
4. Review your expense recordings to check that the categorization is accurate.
5. Reconcile your bank statements.
6. Verify all staff personal and payment information in preparation to send 1099s and W2s.
7. Complete inventory check for all products sold.
8. Run your profit and loss statement and balance sheet.
9. Given all is completed above and you have no hesitations, lock your books for 2023.

These steps are given to you as a DIY guide. I am not a bookkeeper, accountant, or CPA so consult with a professional should you not be equipped to handle this on your own. Every wise person stays in their lane of genius!

Write Your Guide For 2024

Did you think you were going to get away from goal setting?! Absolutely not! How can you be your best if you don't have a plan in place that holds you accountable in all your actions?... Exactly, you won't know without seeing it laid out. And remember, every goal needs to be S.M.A.R.T.

Specific - it's all about the details. No outlines allowed!

Measurable - HELLO, you must be able to note if you were successful in your planning. This can only happen if you note exactly what the benchmark is that you are aiming for.

Achievable - I don't think I need to say more, just know anything is possible but it all begins with one step in the direction you want to go.

Realistic - this is not the time to dream big. This is about real and not another episode of scripted reality TV, entrepreneur division.

Timely - you're setting goals for 2024, so let's not say you want to achieve such and such by 2030. Break the larger goal down into smaller parts that can be accomplished along the way.

There's definitely more you can do to ensure you are ready to move into 2024 confidently. However, it is January 5th so let's focus on the truly MUST DO items so you can get to work. The other items, like updating your business plan, rewriting your marketing plan, completely a SWOT analysis will have to be done along the way if you haven't finished them already.

2023 was a GREAT year in business for the SML Assisting team. We supported seasoned and fresh clients with their administrative needs, we executed weddings in both coordinator and planner roles, and we guided peers on how to best set up their businesses for success. So What's New in 2024?

Nothing! As with any business looking to grow and not be overcommitted, the team and I have continuously redefined our services to work in the best interest of our clients.

So from the eyes of the client (YOU) nothing has changed. Internally, the SML Assisting team will not support as many businesses in an administrative role in 2024 as we did in 2023. This is to allow us the capacity to execute more in-depth projects and be available to consult as needed.

Consultations, not to be confused with Discovery Calls, have increased with the average entrepreneur handling more of their own tasks. This is why the most impactful goal we have this year is to use social media more. Starting with hosting IG Lives.
